A Little Bit About Me...

I have tutored three students: two middle school students in math, one high school student in AP biology. I also occasionally explain academic subjects to my friends and classmates. Through my years of experience, I've found that it is most effective to make sure the students are really thinking. When they get stuck, I ask them questions to point them in the right direction, but I almost never give them the answer unless a lot of time would be wasted otherwise. I'm also very good at catching mistakes, but instead of pointing them out right away, I usually also ask them leading questions to help them find the mistake on their own.

Cogito Ergo Sum- I think therefore I am

I have tutored middle and high school in Science and Math and have helped friends with MCAT and GRE preparation. I have been a Teaching Assistant in the graduate school and have spent a considerable amount of time helping undergraduate and fellow graduate students with biology concepts both theory and laboratory work.
I have a passion for learning and sharing knowledge. I hold two masters' degrees in Biomedical Science and Neuroscience and am working towards a Doctoral Degree now. I have published Scientific Papers in reputed Scientific Journals. I have the ability to simplify the most difficult concept and use illustration to teach. I do not believe that students should memorize each and every word of the subject matter. Education is like a building and knowledge earned at every step of the way should be a brick in the wall. I have trained in yoga and meditation to help release an ... read more

My teaching style changes to fit the requirements of the subject and the needs of my students. I find that presenting and explaining works best for language arts and history, concept teaching works best for science, and direct instruction works best for mathematics. I also take into account the learning preferences of my students: left or right brained, visual, spatial, or kinesthetic because each prefers different treatment. As a tutor I strive to teach each student in the instructional method they prefer because this leads to an increased comfort level and willingness to learn, and it also enables them to process the material faster. This enables them to become more successful students.

As an undergraduate I studied computer engineering with a minor in math. After earning my B.S. I wanted to continue studies and push my career more towards math and physics so I earned an M.S. in electrical engineering. As a graduate student I had a revelation that caused me to reexamine math and engineering concepts, which led to a deeper understanding of them. I am now pursuing a PhD in electrical engineering. My teaching experienced has been unfortunately limited to tutoring family and friends in their college math courses over the past few years. However, those experiences have provided great insight into how to effectively teach a subject, and I am ready to use this experience to benefit a wider audience.
I have over time developed a strong desire to teach and to ignite in others the same passion for learning that my teachers ignited in me. I believe that everyone has the a ... read more

I believe students learn better when the instructor makes it clear where a topic falls within the over-arching themes of the class. Students are then better able place new techniques and knowledge in the context of whatever discipline or field is being taught. Classroom lectures and discussion should always be complemented by homework, tests, and quizzes. In fact it is in homework that the bulk of learning occurs. Just as professional athletes endlessly practice the most simple and boring parts of their game, so also the best students practice and perfect what they are taught.
My degree in physics has equipped me with mathematical, scientific and analytical knowledge. This enables me to comfortably tutor students in many topics within math and science fields. My first teaching experience took place at Camp Powhatan, a summer camp for Boy Scouts, where I was an instructor for two su ... read more
