MBA, BS prepared professional looking to tutor

My primary goal is to help students understand the "why" of studies. "Why" do we look for differentials in calculus? "Why" do we describe imagery in poetry instead of just saying how we feel? "Why" do we enter compound keys in some SQL tables but not others? "Why" do we need a conclusion on our essay? If we understand why we do something, we are far more likely to remember how to do it. I also strive to keep the homework the work of the student. They do the work, I guide them to the correct (or at least best) answer. Students are more likely to remember how to complete the problem if they are in the driver seat, not the tutor.

More About This Tutor...

As an undergraduate student in India, I used to help my younger brother and cousins with school. Especially being in engineering my Math, Chemistry and Physics backgrounds are very strong. I have never tutored for money but I used to tutor a lot for free. This developed my passion for teaching and even as a graduate student at Univ. of North Texas, I used to teach undergraduate students (including freshmen). I have taught engineering classes at undergraduate level, which requires extensive math skills.
I always believed that all the children are smart and can learn difficult things. For them to do that all they need is a good teacher who can develop their interest in the subject, which will ultimately result in their success. I was successful in doing that with my brother and my cousin and today they both work in IT companies and Software engineers. I am very proud that I could mak ... read more

While I was at Bethel, I earned two bachelor degrees, one in Creative Writing and one in Spanish. Each of these friends received A's or B's on their polished work. I also studied in Spain for one semester to complete my degree. I will strive to help any student that I work with gain knowledge and be able to apply that knowledge in their schooling and everyday life.

I have worked with students of many different backgrounds, ages, and abilities. I love to help a student find that "a-ha" moment where he or she finally understands a concept that has been a struggle. I enjoy teaching new concepts or working with students to master a concept.
I currently teach in an interim classroom for secondary students who have been suspended or expelled. I teach all subjects, but am most comfortable with LA and math. Before this, I taught in a high school classroom for students with behavioral disabilities. I taught LA and social skills. I also have been a para-educator in a junior high school, a substitute teacher, and taught dance lessons.

We might all learn differently and at different paces but we can definitely learn math!

I believe a teacher should encourage his/her students to discover the subject and ask good questions. Approachability and Authority should be balanced during teaching, thus the teacher would be both trustworthy and approachable. I student would appreciate a teacher who is really prepared and willing to be a good source for the student's curiosity.

A Little Bit About Me...

I will find a positive way to teach a student of any age. Although I always say I don't have the tolerance for negativity, I consider myself an expert when it comes to turning it into positive thinking. I also have extensive experience teaching students that are either hesitant or reluctant to put forth effort to learn. In the past I have countered this with positive comebacks and humor, which is usually greeted with a smile.

I have earned two MS degrees and a BS degree in chemistry in my academic career. I have two-and-a-half year experience of teaching undergraduate students at the University of Iowa. I received a very good evaluation from students which I would be happy to share with you. I have also passed SPEAK TEST along with the English Language Performance Test which is a requirement to be able to teach at the University of Iowa.
From my teaching experience at the University of Iowa, I think that the level of understanding of the subject varies from student to student. Some students grasp the subject easily while it is hard for others. Therefore I always try to teach the subject in a manner that will consider all the different levels of students and in which questions are encouraged.

A Little Bit About Me...

"What do you want to be when you grow up?" The life long question...I can remember responding with teaching. Life throws you curves, and I ended up in Business. I still have the desire to educate others and want to dedicate a part of my life to that dream. Each child has a unique way of learning. The key to success is identifying the best techniques. Once you find the correct methods, then the child can become better educated. I will strive to find the correct style, add enthusiasm, and find a way for the child to relate. I will create a system of recognition and goals. Structure helps motivate and encourage people. All children have their strengths and weaknesses. I believe it is important to emphasize on the strengths while improving on the weaknesses. I want to show my strengths and make a difference in a child’s life.

A Little Bit About Me...

Because of my elementary background, it is safe to say I am a very patient person and I use that skill in my ability. I allow the children to create their own paths and when there are roadblocks we work together to find a solution. I am not in the habit of giving students the answers. I feel education is most effective when self discovery is involved and I want my students to feel that they are learning and achieving in every way possible. All students are capable of success; some just need more guidance than others.
My teaching experience has been primarily focused on elementary education, however I have tutored freshman in English and History. I have a degree in psychology from St. Ambrose in Davenport and finished my licensure at Ottawa University in Phoenix. I am certified to teach K-6 in Arizona and I have applied for Iowa certification.
