For writing, usually I conduct some exercises. The level of the critique and what to say depends heavily on the age of the student. For grammar, I would either find or create my own practice materials and we could go over whatever is necessary until I've decided that the student is making improvements or the student has succeeded. I do not believe in standardized testing. Each child has the capability of learning, but not all children have the ability to take tests, for whatever reason. I tend to "test" by playing games, such as Jeopardy, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, etc...and have the questions be cumulative in nature, not just on the part that we are learning.
