A Little Bit About Me...

I have never taught a subject, physics, mathematics or philosophy, at a level that was beyond the abilities of any student who really wanted to master the material, and I don't think I'd be interested at teaching at that level. Many students are not able to master these subjects in school, but quite often it is not due to a lack of desire on their part, but instead a lack of sufficient preparation due most often to poor prior instruction. I have always been successful in helping students I tutor in overcoming their deficiencies in this area, regardless of the subject.
I wanted very much to teach at the Liberal Arts College level but was unable to secure a full-time, permanent position. In pursuit of this goal, I have completed an MS in Physics, all the coursework necessary for a MS in Mathematics, an MA in Philosophy, and I am working to complete my PhD in philosophy. I teach with passion and enjoyment, which has always proved conducive to the learning process. I, myself, have always enjoyed being a student, and realized what qualities in teachers I found most effective. Patience, competency, articulation and good-natured humor go a very long way in education and I believe I possess those traits. I have worked with mainstream students, Special Education students, and Deaf students in a variety of educator roles from straight tutoring to camp counseling. Through these experiences, I have realized that a teacher must have flexibility and creativity in how they present information, as everyone has a different learning style. The responsibility lies with the educator to find that style and help the student reach his/her highest potential, and I feel confident in my ability to do so.
In all my endeavors I strive for variety. My collegiate caree ... read more

I am interactive and student-centered. I see where the student's strengths lie and build from there. We do homework and tests together, and I move from a coaching role to an observational one, only coaching occasionally as necessary. We work not only on the subject matter, but techniques which improve comprehension, retention, organization and motivation.
I have taught and tutored both children and adults in a wide variety of situations, from job training and test preparation to tutoring for a specific subject. I have taught ESL classes and done individual tutoring, as well as both group and one-on-one instruction in grammar and composition. I have tutored for SAT, ACT, TOEFL, TOEIC, ISEE and entrance exams. I have created my own materials for such tutoring but also use books available commercially.

I really enjoy teaching. There's two things in particular I find especially amazing: The first is working with a student and hear them say, "Oh, that's what it's all about! I get it now." Seeing that sudden "click" when a difficult subject is suddenly clear is absolutely golden. The second is being able see the improvement they've made. In order to see this improvement, I work patiently and strive to always encourage my students through every step of the learning process. My teaching style tends to be energetic and enthusiastic; if the teacher isn't excited about the topic, the student won't be, either. Every child can reach their potential given the right environment.
As a student at the University of Colorado at Boulder, I've witnessed students struggling to understand concepts and began tutoring in order to help them. In addition to the courses I've taken for my environmental ... read more

As a rising junior at Cornell University, I was asked to TA a Chemistry course for engineers. I accepted and entered into my first teaching position. Immediately, I knew teaching was right for me. Helping explain a complicated topic in a simple way and watch students get it is an amazing experience. I quickly signed up to TA 3 more courses next semester (Bio,Chem,CS). After graduation I continued teaching at KAAPrep. There I taught 1on1 and group lectures on math and science subjects and standardized tests like SAT2's and AP's. Lastly, I taught Organic Chemistry at the Weill medical school in the Middle East. I was born and lived in Russia until I was 11, so I am fluent in the language.
I strongly believe in learning by doing. I have never given a lecture or taught something 1on1 without providing practice problems or peppering students with questions. The hardest part about this ... read more

When you enter a classroom it is like entering a mixing bowl full of different ability levels, motivation levels, talent, and skill. It is the teacher’s job to address each one of their students as an individual to assess what their strengths and weaknesses are. I believe in data driven assessments, but also in getting to know a student personally. The students know what they are good and not good at. They will be honest most of the time if they are comfortable with you. I believe in differentiation to the highest degree and practiced this in my alternative high school experience every single day. It is not fair to bore some students with information they already know and overwhelm others to the point of lowering their self esteem. To address each skill level is to know your students personally and academically.
I am a firm believer that it takes someone special to be a teacher. A ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love to mentor and advise students in the most advanced and current teachings in the field. I believe that everyone has something that motivates and inspires them. It is up to us as educators to find those motivations and cultivate them. I am patient, understanding, and always open to new ideas and lesson plans. I believe in consistency and perserverence.
I am currently striving towards being a career educator. Throughout my professional career I have always been responsible for training and mentoring my clients and employees. I was a substitute teacher in Florida where I taught middle school and high school students.
