Improving writing at all levels

Tutoring without Tears.

Students learn best when they feel safe to explore and learn from past mistakes. In fact, 'mistakes' should be viewed as opportunities to improve skills and learning strategies. I use 'play therapy' most often to teach skills and strategies. Multiple studies have demonstrated that children learn best through play.
I have 30+ years of experience helping students with a variety of disabilities which include language disorders. A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that all children want and try to do their best, but sometimes need an extra push. I think it is necessary to use the appropriate curriculum, but to find out what teaching method works best for each student as we all learn differently. It is also important for each child/student to have some flexibility in what they learn in order to express their individuality and own creativity.
I have been caring for children of all ages for the last 9 years, which includes tutoring and metoring. I am also in my second year as a substitute teacher, in which I teach grades pre-k through 12th grade.

I am an experienced teacher that has taught secondary English and journalism for the past 13 years. I have six years of experience teaching Advanced Placement English composition with a 60% pass rate. More About This Tutor...

I graduated from Columbia University with a BA in English and political science and spent the four years following graduation working on the communications team for Mayor Michael Bloomberg in New York City. In that capacity I supervised a staff of five full time employees and a variable number of interns. That experience was helpful in terms of learning to teach and mentoring college-age and post-college individuals. I moved to St. Louis about two months ago and will be starting a PhD program in English literature at Washington University in the fall. As part of that program I will be teaching college writing.
