Between the years of 1978 and 1984 I was a monitor and then a supervisor in a small Christian school using the ACE curriculum. They have various programmed learning booklets teaching all of the major subjects. You are actually more of a tutor than a teacher if you work with these booklets. I have experience in the four major areas of learning which are English, Math, Social Studies, and Science. I was with students from first through twelfth grade. While I was college I had occasion to take two years of college level English and also statistics up through 600 level. The English helped when I was writing my Master’s Thesis, it was 120 pages long. My committee found it to be well written. The statistics was the basis for the thesis.
I love to help a student work their way through any difficulty they are having in any of the major subjects. It is always a challenge to direct the stu ... read more

I believe in mentoring. It does take a few times for the student (young and old) to understand that I cannot teach them anything. I can present information to them and attempt to inspire them to learn, but they are the ones who ultimately teach themselves. I very much enjoy helping them figure out the answers to their own problems. My motto: It is my job to help you not need me anymore!
I am a professional singer, actress and dancer who has taught throughout my 15 year career. I truly love teaching, especially in a one-on-one or very small group setting. I also work with the local home school community as a 'tutor' for math and English.

When helping others, I do it two ways. I tell them how to do it and guide them through it. Other times, I show them how to do it. However, I do not do it for them. I would love to have the chance to help children succeed in their education! It would be an honor!

As a teacher I realize that every student has a different style of learning, and I work to quickly understand the best ways to teach students in a one on one setting, generally using some form of self-discovery, depending on the subject. When teaching music I seek to help the student to learn good practice behavior and an understanding of where they fit in the the big picture of a music group. I firmly believe that children have greater potential than often recognized, and know that finding their passions and providing practical application provides for the best learning environment.
As a volunteer with the Salvation Army I have spent many years volunteering with children, teaching Sunday School and Band. A Little Bit About Me...

I am a patient person who is used to tutoring students as that is what homeschooling is. I believe in learning by doing, experiential education. Many students think that they can't do something that is hard, but when it is broken down into small pieces, they find that it is not as difficult as they thought. I believe that all children should be allowed to learn at their own pace. "Getting things done is not always what is most important. There is value in allowing others to learn, even if the task is not accomplished as quickly, efficiently or effectively." -- R.D. Clyde
I attended Houghton College for 2 1/2 years. Then I went to NCCC and earned an AS, then transferred to Charter Oak State College. They took all the credits I had earned as a student at both schools, allowed me to define my degree, told me which additional credits I needed and granted my degree. I have homescho ... read more

I believe children learn best when they can form a connection to their school work. Writing skills can be improved by using topics that are relevant to the student's life. When working on Reading skills I often use high interest topics such as the arts, sports, computers and science to encourage students to excel. Math can also become more meaningful by using real life situations and manipulatives. It is my goal to increase students' self esteem by providing situations in which they can succeed.
During my 23 years of teaching I implemented Kindergarten through 6th grade New York State curriculum in a classroom setting. I attended workshops that focused on computer education, Multiage classroom and positive discipline.

A Little Bit About Me...

All children are students; they can learn. The question is how best do they learn? I have used many differing styles from rote memorization through self-paced self-education. I encourage students to see the wonder and "mystery" (there really isn't any mystery) of Math, regardless of the level, in the real world. To that aid, I try to present real world problems at levels the student can understand. For lower level students, I investigate with them the development of the linear equations involved in setting up a relationship between two factors. A higher level student would solve multiple linear equations. A height vs. time linear relationship then can become quadratic, thus involving sports as an application.
My first career was as a Registered Professional Nurse (NYS licensure) for 25 years. During those years, I kept up my interest in various fields of math, such as Abs ... read more

My method is very student-centered: learn the student's interests, strengths, weaknesses, and needs, and the way to properly teach them anything will be clear as day. I believe very strongly that people best digest knowledge when it's delivered to them "in their own language," and in ways that they can easily identify cognitively. I also bring in a very patient, nurturing, and encouraging attitude that allows for even frustrating subjects to be learned at a sound and progressive pace without extreme amounts of stress or pressure. Nothing makes a difference in a child's life like education, and I plan on giving the best that I can!

A Little Bit About Me...

I have always enjoyed teaching people in a one-on-one or small group environment. It allows me to tailor my teaching style to fit the individual student or group I’m working with. I enjoy using creative methods to teach a topic, including creating multiple ways to explain a term or concept and providing analogies to concepts that are familiar to the student. All people comprehend concepts in different ways and at varying speeds. Thus as I teach a concept I am constantly looking for signs of understanding, and then stop and reinforce a concept when it is apparent that the student does not understand. Teaching is a very fluid process, one that requires acute understanding of the challenges students face when learning, and an active process that requires energy and intelligence on the part of the teacher, qualities I believe I possess.

In order for students to be successful, teachers must provide the resources necessary for each individual to reach their greatest potential. Every student has his or her own way of learning. It is the teacher’s responsibility to use various learning styles. I believe students should learn through discovery and through creativity. In order for children to reach their full potential, they must be given a healthy, safe, and exciting environment in which they feel comfortable. Teachers have an enormous impact on the lives of children. In today's world especially, teachers should not only be great educators, they should be excellent role models and mentors as well.

I love teaching, working, and playing with children. I believe that children learn most effectively from using both a hands and minds-on learning/teaching style. As all children come from differing/diverse backgrounds, I utilize communication with both the students and parents in order to effectively teach said child. I believe that all children have the potential for growth and success in the classroom and beyond, if they are given the appropriate tools and encouragement.
