Writing, Publishing, and a Passion for History

I've done substitute teaching as well as taught continuing education classes in the writing arena. I have experience in a wide variety of 'life' fields--publishing, writing, running a bed and breakfast, sales, and more. I've written screenplays and produced my own short film. Working on film and writing projects--especially those with a tie to 'real' life--is my passion!

Experienced Tutor with Expertise in Math and Social Science

My teaching style varies for each student, I try to tailor the work to how the student learns.
I have been tutoring students of all ages since I was in high school. I began by tutoring my own peers in math and social studies. I would also tutor children from 1st grade on up in all subjects. Once in college, I tutored college students and younger in many fields, primarily mathematics courses. My specialty quickly became preparation for standardized tests as well as calculus because I have a unique ability to discover how each student learns and tailor the lessons to their needs. I can quickly find where the knowledge gaps exist for each student and fill in those gaps, in order to create a complete understanding of the topic, not just get them to memorize answers.

Some are more comfortable hearing instruction, others should be shown visually.... and others use a mix.Safety and security, along with comfort is critical to success. Methods utilized will vary upon the needs of the learner. The instructor must be flexible and adapt to the circumstances and needs of the child, teen or adult. Experiential learning is the best way for children to learn and retain the message. Therefore, creativity is important. A tutor may use jingles, rhymes or real life experiences as a way to help a child remember the lessons. Adult learners have their struggles too! I try as hard as possible to interest and engage the student in science by finding good learning opportunities in the lab, in the field and in the daily news. The most enjoyable part of my job is being able to show someone a bit of engineering or to help them with their engineering work . My teaching style is more to ask questions of student and not to lecture. I also believe in using a humorous or pratical analogy for abstract concept and theory. I believe that fundamentally any student can learn and be successful.
My previous job involved the design and review of Bridges, Culverts, and storm sewers on highway projects to insure completeness and accuracy. I also was involved in the development of drainage Designs and Hydraulic models for Highway Projects.
