It wasn't long before math was my favorite class and I changed my major. When I was in school I helped a lot of my classmates with calculus. If they can realate the information to an actual happening, they are more likely to remember. In terms of test preparation, aside from learning the information it is important to work on test-taking skills (relaxation, focus, etc.). I find a way to explain a technique based on what the student already knows how to do. If a student does not know how to solve a problem, then I will show the student how I solve the problem, explaining my thinking and results as I go along. Then, I give the student a blank sheet of paper and they have to do the problem all by themselves. I may also change the problem a little and have them do it again to practice the technique.
