My favorite part of tutoring is working with children who are frustrated with a subject and being able to break it down and teach it to them in a way that they can relate to. Also, the self-confidence the student gets that comes from being prepared for a test is very important.

The Greenville County School District uses a computer system to contact teachers to substitute in schools which starts calling substitute teachers at 5:30am on the school day. I taught K-12 all subjects and special ed. In September through December 2005 I substituted at Duncan Elementry School in Duncan, South Carolina K-3rd grade. January through June 2006 I substitute taught at Easley High School in Easley, South Carolina all classes.

My approach is to help the student understand what each problem requires and to devise a “plan of attack” to solve the problem. I try to help the student avoid the notion that “every problem is a new problem,” but instead to look for patterns and similarities to problems they have already successfully solved. I also encourage the student to keep working on basic arithmetic skills and to work review problems from previous units in order to sharpen their techniques. I believe, especially when it comes to mathematics, the student learns best when reminded to “show all your work.” That way mistakes can be traced and corrected along the way.
