Don't risk your grade/money on mere paper qualifications

My teaching style relies heavily on feedback from the client. I try to have a phone call with a student to learn what they are having difficulty with but also what their professor might expect from them. Then I get a good sense of their personality to understand the best way to get ideas across to them. There are often roadblocks to learning such as personal hangups or self doubt that must be addressed. Other times it is just a matter of understanding what the person does or does not get.
You will see many ads by former or current professors trying to make a buck on the side. They are terrible tutors - they spent their whole careers having students beg them for a better grade. I have spent my whole life learning how to explain the most complex concepts to absolutely anybody. You will also see many people touting a related professional position as qualification. Many of them ... read more

Become Computer Savvy with Someone Who Cares

I completed my Bachelor's Degree in Psychology in 2008. Throughout college I participated in research and internships that required non stop use of computers and computer programs like Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. I currently work as a public library reference clerk where I also teach computer classes and answer computer questions for library patrons daily.
My teaching style is patient, and step by step, and you can ask as many questions as you like!

My teaching style is tailored to the individual. The first thing I do when I'm trying to teach someone something is determine their learning style. If they don't know it I help them figure it out. I do find that most people learn best by diving in and doing it themselves first, while I serve as a "safety net". Whenever I was teaching new helmsmen or junior officers how to steer survey lines, I would direct them how to do it the first few times, and then when they felt ready to try it themselves, I stood back and let them, not stepping in until the absolute last second. Letting them make and try to correct their own mistakes seemed to be the best teaching tool I had.
As a NOAA Corps Officer, I helped teach new personnel many facets of our day-to-day operations, from instructing new officers on getting their Officer of the Deck qualifications to preparing new survey techs for their h ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style initally involves getting to the know the person, what they are struggling with, why they think they may need a tutor, and anything they have tried in the past and what has and has not worked for them. I like to encorporate all aspects to assist with learning (visual aids, listening, and hands-on/practical). This may involve games, cartoons/movies (if tutoring Spanish), worksheeets. I also feel that goal-setting is important, and I think I would ask the tutee to set some individual/personal goals for themself, (i.e. amount of time studying or achieving certain fluency level).
I recently earned my M.A. in Counseling. I have extensive experience in working with individuals (children, adolescents, adults), from diverse backgrounds. I have earned two B.A. degrees, in Psychology and Spanish. I am very familiar with the academic and learning environment, as well ... read more

My teaching style is multisensory, utilizing sight, sound and touch. I'm very patient and I love teaching children. For me, the highlight of teaching is when a child suddenly gets that 'aha moment'; when the light bulb finally turns on and the child understands the concept. My goal is to make sure my students feel safe, important and intelligent while having fun learning.
As a Certified Dyslexia teacher, I teach Orton-Gillingham multisensory curriculum to students with dyslexia and other reading deficits. My one on one tutoring is designed to get to the root of the problem by building and reinforcing phonemic and grapheme awareness using sight, sound and touch. Being an elementary substitute teacher and certified dyslexia teacher I continue my professional development in my areas of expertise.

I had an amazing biology teacher in high school who was upbeat, interactive and made learning, memorable and fun. I try to take this same approach myself to figure out what is important to students and play on their interests and strengths to help them learn. I typically try a couple of different styles, like flash card memorization, word association (sometimes seemingly unrelated but the funnier and more obscure they are, tend to stick in the memory better), picture association, etc. Having effective discussions about subject matters, particularly with difficult topics, can help the student gain a more in depth understanding.
At the undergraduate level, as a high honors student, I took the opportunity to tutor psychology and biology undergraduates. I also received a TA position for Research Methods in psychology. I also volunteered for 2 years mentoring underprivileged Junior H ... read more

I believe that it is important to determine how exactly a person learns. Some people are audio learners and need to talk it out. Others learn better by repetition and doing different examples. I have learned from tutoring math, many people use a combination of learning techniques and it is important for a tutor to be patient with the student and to use positive reinforcement.
As a graduate of the University of Virginia and Kaplan University, I know the meaning of hard work and dedication. I received my BA in Sociology with a minor in Religion from the University of Virginia in 2004. I went on to receive my MBA in Finance from Kaplan University in 2009. I have always had a love for math as my older sister is a math professor. Everything that she learned, she taught to me. Visual explanation and simple repetition are the most successful tools to help a child learn. I am patient and calm with students but not afraid of discipline. Before college I was a summer camp counselor for three years and part-time babysitter; jobs that taught me how to work with children. I hope to improve a child's life through improving education.
In the past year I have graduated with a double major and passed the Society of Actuaries' Probability exam. My experience in finding effective study techniques and quickly understanding new material allows me to explain subjects to others as directly as possible. I am determined to make the most of each hour of every day.

I believe it is very important to teach students in a way in which they will understand and retain the information. Each student learns differently and I am willing to implement the teaching method that would be most effective for each student. As a tutor, I would encourage the student and build confidence as they learn. This gives the student a sense of accomplishment and promotes academic success.
