I believe that everyone can learn with enough effort. However approaching the material in a way that makes sense to the student is key to allowing the student to understand new ideas. I like to think of new and creative ways to explain ideas to students and am patient and considerate when I teach. I believe in the value of every student and strive to instill self-confidence. I think that teachers have an incredible opportunity to improve the lives of the students they teach. I desire to not only teach students new ideas and skills, but give them the tools to be an active learner.
I began college level scientific research when I was a senior in high school by volunteering in a UO chemistry lab. My teaching style is probably best suited to high school and college students. Although I successfully helped my own 3 children through their elementary school, high school and college years, my tutoring experience has been with older students. My wife is a Montessori trained teacher so I have absorbed that method for tutoring. Each student must be viewed as an individual to define the areas of weakness and fill them in. It is only when the student understands the basics of a subject that they can build a future in it.
Although I have earned my degree, BS in Psychology, my previous education includes 2 years at St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico and 2 years of Engineering at Oregon State University.
