Making school awesome for students is challenging, but it is something that gives me a lot of satisfaction. Before I begin teaching, I create several goals and strategies to make it clear what I expect and what direction we want to go. I emphasize that as long as they give it a 100% effort, they will do well. I use as many teaching tools as possible. I make the concepts as clear as possible, and I check for understanding before we move on. I make classes interesting by connecting the material to things they like. I also like to incorporate games. Finally, I like to maintain a sense of humor. This not only allows class to be enjoyable, but the students do better when they are relaxed. I began college level scientific research when I was a senior in high school by volunteering in a UO chemistry lab. Since then I have: measuring tectonic plate movement in the Caribbean, creating models of multi-phase flow, and testing the accuracy of GPS in devices like BlackBerry and Droid phones for vehicle fuel-use modeling. I have two bachelors degrees, BS in mathematics and BS in geology. In addition my passion for math and science was acknowledged with a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship honorable mention. I enjoy working with people, and have mentored undergraduate geology interns and taught pre-calculus as a supplementary instructor. A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is probably best suited to high school and college students. Although I successfully helped my own 3 children through their elementary school, high school and college years, my tutoring experience has been with older students. My wife is a Montessori trained teacher so I have absorbed that method for tutoring. Each student must be viewed as an individual to define the areas of weakness and fill them in. It is only when the student understands the basics of a subject that they can build a future in it.
Although I have earned my degree, BS in Psychology, my previous education includes 2 years at St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico and 2 years of Engineering at Oregon State University.
