Skilled teacher and writer dedicated to your success

I taught high school English, journalism and speech for more than 30 years before retiring in 2013. I also taught a year in middle school, a year in community college and worked in administrative positions at the elementary, middle school and high school levels. I have worked with students at all levels, from remedial to advanced placement and worked in an alternative high school setting. I have received training in the scoring of advanced placement literature exams and am a published writer. I also have taught SAT prep classes.
I like to get to know my students and build a strong relationship with each one. I work to connect the subject matter to their lives and to the real world. I set high standards, but understand that each student will work toward those standards at his or her own pace and in his or her own style.

I would say that my style is one of direction. Helping students find answers, teaching them how to research for the answers and developing paths of choices to determine which one to take and determining the outcome of that choice or the alternatives. I feel better challenging them to use their thinking skills, their cognitive processing skills & decision making skills. Every child, I believe, learns differently and a good tutor or teacher, takes the time to find that out for the student(s) they are working with. Success is important for growth, independence and adulthood.
I have over 20 years experience in training individuals in materials related to their employment & career preparation. I've also worked as a CASA worker in Idaho and had to prepare reports for the courts/judges review to determine placement of at risk cildren. I graduated with my master's three years ago, so I haven't had any actual teaching, but I have tutored for the community college where I live. I tutored essay writing and some math. I was also certified as a tutor through our community college. In college I taught certain subjects, but just for part of certain classes. I am presently tutoring on line also.
As an older student I was very driven to achieve a high level of excellence in my education, hardly ever missing a class. I earned my bachelor's degree from Oregon State University, taking mainly writing and literature. In my master's program I did a lot of writing classes and I focused mainly on publishing, and subjects such as editing and grammar. Instead of taking Spanish, I took statistics. This was very hard and I passed all three math classes after not having any math for many years. I also did some technical writing and cr ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have taken many classes and seminars regarding personalities and teaching styles. I believe this is why when one of my daughters, now 16 years old, was having trouble in the third grade I pulled her and her twin sister and home schooled them through eighth grade. They now go to Santiam Christian where they excel - in fact the Admissions Coordinator told me that she has never seen kids do so well coming from a home school environment. It is my belief that when teaching you need to discover what teaching style best suits that individual and structure the teaching in that way. I have taught in Sunday School, our local Home School group and tutored my nephews when they were younger.
My name is Julie.I am the elder sister.Linda has ALWAYS love kids. From baby dolls to working in the church nursery at the age of about six (in fact, any time she came up missing on Sunday mornings we kn ... read more

Every child has a window of time when learning to write and read is at its peak. I’ve observed this can begin as early as three or four years of age. Yet the child who discovers his/her fascination with language at the age of eight is no less gifted. So I believe patiently leading children through auditory, kinesthetic and auditory learning channels will grant them opportunities to learn rapidly. Methods like Nellie Edge’s “Early Literacy” or the “Right to Read” program offer them these chances at appropriate ages in the classroom. Tutoring offers exceptional chances at all ages because nothing matches one-on-one assistance.
The voyage of deepening a child’s enthusiasm to write and read well is so delightful and satisfying! This revelation didn’t come in my writing courses in high school or college but when I taught my four children to read and write. Now that they’re all in colleg ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love watching the face of a child when they realize that they have mastered a word that previously eluded them. When I tutor a child in reading, I will ask them questions about what they like to learn or how they like to have the teacher teach them and then base my tutoring off their answers. This way, the child feels involved in the process as well as gains the knowledge in a manner that feels correct for them to learn. I have had much success with tutoring children this way. I love the chance to make a child a reader.
Since I was a young girl, the English language has been as important to me as breathing. I am a strong believer in interrelating knowledge in diverse areas and illuminating its applications to real life in the belief that students are more motivated to learn when the relevance of that learning is clear to them. Students must not simply believe that they have acquired knowledge, but that they have gained understanding if the knowledge is to make any real difference in their lives. I believe it is important, especially with children, to respect the intelligence of the student, and to that end I employ a great deal of Socratic method. I seek to broaden the horizons of all my students, and impart a deeper appreciation for the world and the cosmos that we inhabit through every subject.
I hold BAs in History and Modern Languages (German/French), and have done graduate work in Theology and French Translation. This background has given me a broad understanding across the huma ... read more
