I do believe that teaching students depends on the types of students you teach. You have to consider their learning style. This includes different teaching strategies suited for your students. His is so important as far as what type of assessments that should be given in order to evaluate whether your students are ready for any final test to be given such as Standardized Test like SAT, SOL, College Board Exam.
I have been teaching all types of Mathematics for 30 years from Elementary up to college. Presently, I am a full time high school math teacher teaching Algebra I and II and AP Calculus. For the past two years, I have been working as an adjunct instructor and tutor in mathematics and computer information systems for a local Community College. This experience has been so fulfilling, that I am diligently pursuing a career change from Information Technology professional to teaching. I also taught mathematics for one year at a private school.
Students generally perform better with hands-on practice. I provide multiple opportunities for hands-on and guided practice as time permits. Associate new concepts to familiar ones. Our memories are largely associative in nature. Therefore, providing connections from new concepts back to well established ones increases our retention and recall. This is especially important in building up understanding in mathematics. Provide relevant examples. A student who is actively enaged in the lesson will learn more.

I have a great deal of experience training fellow employees and have devised the system of show them once, let them do it once while talking them through it, and then let them do it once without assistance. This system also translates to teaching. The last step is the most important; it forces the student to think for him or herself and instills confidence that the problem is not beyond his or her level of understanding. It is very important to teach students how to figure things out for themselves – probably the most important lesson I learned at UVa.
