A Little Bit About Me...

I have substitute taught for over 16 years and this past year I worked with the SES program tutoring. My areas of focus are sciences and maths but I have had to tutor reading. This year I tutored middle school students but I have tutored elementary as well. I tend to focus on the high level maths and sciences often taking long term positions in high school.
I started substitute teaching when I was in undergraduate school just as a source of income and because I like teaching. My mother is a retired teacher who taught for over 30 years. I work as an engineer but I always find time to tutor. I have tutored with an SES program and have found that this worked really well. Focusing on how the children learn as a method to approach how they should be tutored is very effective and the children learn.

As a parent of four, educator, education advocate and mentor, I have spent most of my adult life working with young people in various learning enviroments. I have a love for and commitment to educational preparedness for students of every learning level. I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree, the Master of Social Sciences degree, a Master of Arts degree, and will receive the Ph.D degree in Educational Innovation and Human Development in May 2010.
My teaching style is highly interactive and engaged. The relationship between student and teacher is based on mutual respect for our respective capabilities. An important first step in teaching, and particularly in introducing new material, is to construct a frame of reference familiar to the student, and then begin to expand that frame to enhance conceptualization and mastery of new skills and knowledge.

I have even considered getting my teaching certification. I currently have my MBA in Business management and feel most comfortable teaching math reading and English to children ages 5-12.

I have a extensive background with teaching and implementation in education. My most current position was the Executive Director of School Improvement and Sales. I have experience analyzing data, working with teams to improve student achievement using research based interventions. I have experience from Elementary to College level.
I believe that all students have the ability to learn but not in the same way and on the same day. It takes work, but a teacher needs to find what works best for each student to learn. It is essential to utilize the multiple intelligences as well as theories on how boys and girls learn differently. I work well with parents and students, breaking down barriers and working within the parameters that work best.
