I have nine years of teaching in public schools. I have taught science, health, and physical education. My experience with science is very vast and encompasses all realms from junior high science to biology to chemistry. I am flexible in my teaching style because of my experience with professionals and the general public, and because of the diverse topics that I have studied. I like to make a difference when someone wants to learn. As an Associate Research Professor at Duke University I conducted research on the health of the elderly population and the genetic background to age-related diseases. I am well published, always serving as my own statistician. The background to most common disorders in adults is complex involving multiple genes, thus I used advanced fuzzy latent class analysis to identify high and low risk sets of gene variants and to define the level of risk for individuals. I have collaborated with graduate students and taught genetcs to medical students. As a co-founder and the scientific director of Matrix Genomics, Inc. I relate genetic concepts to others on a daily basis.

I am a dynamic teaher who believes in a hands on, interactive approach to teaching. Lots of give and take, as well as open ended questioning. The importance of learning vs. teaching is a constant in my method. A student asked me once, was my job to pass, or fail everyone. I responded that my job was to educate. I want my students to become independent readers and writers, but also inquirers. I do this through modeling what I expect them to learn, provide time for guided practice, reteach and model more if necessary, then provide opportunities for independent practice, while giving specifc feed back. There is no 'One size fits all" in education and as a teacher, I will feel like I have been a true educator if I constantly strive to learn more deeply about how students learn and take that knowledge and apply it, but first you have to truly know your students. There is a difference in being a teacher and an educator. My two and half years of teaching math and physics in high school as well as 8 years of college teaching taught me a great deal about encouraging learning.
