My old next door neighbors have two children. One is a boy in elementary and one is a girl in middle school. I tutored the boy in reading and writing. He was able to read his first book on his own after a few weeks with me. I had to tutor the girl in math. she was taking algebra and was having a tough time with it. In two weeks of many meetings, she was able to pass her final exam. No matter what grade I was in, I always enjoyed going down to the ESE room and helping the special kids. I did what ever I could to help.

Teaching Math in English and Russian.

I am a professional teacher. I have 15 years of experience teaching. I have taught Math and Computer Science in college. Also I have taught in both public and private school systems. I have experience private tutoring for students in school, college and also university. I do understand that all students learn at different degrees but they all can learn better. So I am always teaching my students with considering their individual characteristics. I enjoy teaching because I very often hear from my students that they really start to understand Math or Computer Science better only when I take them to learn. Working one-on-one with a student is a great opportunity to really focus on the individual characteristics and academic needs of the student and helping them to be more successful in learning.

My experience, (both academic and work)has been widely varied, ranging from research and engineering to financial management in a corporate environment, followed by golf course design and landscape management. In addition I used my experience in construction and woodworking to build and market patio furniture. Unfortunately the housing depression of the mid 2000's caused the business to be non profitable and was closed. Since 2005 I have been semi retired and used my construction experience to work at a lumber and hardware store.

My teaching experience has been both formal and informal. I’ve been a teaching assistant to college undergraduates, an instructor in management studies and also an instructor for dog obedience classes (you’re really teaching the owner, not the dog). My informal experience has been with my kids, helping them with homework and as a scout den leader and a coach for baseball and softball, and now with my grandkids. In my professional life, I brought new products and services to market which involved educating and orienting individuals and groups through demonstrating and teaching opportunities.
My teaching style is best described as adaptive. We all learn differently, some more so by doing, others by seeing or listening, and others by thinking it through. Learning is a combination of processes, emphasizing what works best. For me, the approach is to use what works best for ... read more

I believe strongly in approaching each child with a variety of techniques. I let the child explore why, then give concept information. The student then needs to practice, and finally personalize the information. This must be done using both analysis (left brain) and synthesis(right brain).

As a non-traditional student, my college experience awarded me many advantages, as well as, many opportunities to uncover hidden skills. I began tutoring for Student Support Services while attending community college in Southwest Virginia. I worked with adults, disabled and traditional students in many subject areas. This led to establishing the Eagle's Wing Mentoring Program while attending Florida Gulf Coast University for the first two years. I later transferred to the Office of Adaptive Services where I am currently still working with a wide variety of students.
As I discovered while in college, I have been instructing people all of my life. While working in the food-service industry for the past twenty-plus years, I have held supervisory positions and provided training to literally hundreds of employees. This natural ability to work with others became apparent when I beg ... read more

The definition of success varies from person to person, from situation to situation, from school to school, from goal to goal. A success story that I am proud to repeat to all who will listen occurred during the 2003-2004 school year. I had a group of 50 awnery, rambunctious, and extremely diverse eighth graders. These eighth graders were highly motivated. Unfortunately they were not motivated in the area of English, or responsibility, dependability, perseverance, or respect. Though these students had an abundance of creativity, knowledge, and ability, they lacked the focus and direction to use it TOWARD their education rather than AGAINST it. Through a lot of modeling, practice, encouragement, praise, and I'll admit, a lot of begging at times, these students began to become self-advocates for their own education. They began clearly seeing their education as an investment ... read more

I love teaching all ages, nearly all subjects. I understand that everyone has different styles of learning. When teaching to a group, ideally all styles would be touched on (auditory, visual, hands-on). When working one-on-one, though, it is possible to teach towards that individual's particular style of learning. This works so much better than a one-size-fits-all method of teaching. If one way of teaching isn't working, I search for a different approach, until I find one that works. I try to explain concepts using ideas and terms that the student is familiar with. This allows the student to relate new concepts to already familiar ones, which helps it 'stick' better. I love 'aha' or 'lightbulb' moments - it makes it all worthwhile!

I believe the best way to teach is to relate the subject to the children. A child may not understand fractions but if you ask them to divide up a candy bar, they know how many pieces they want to split it in to and how many they want. I believe that listening is the key to teaching. A good teacher and a good listener is the difference between a child attending school and a child excelling in school.
While living in Japan, I taught English to the Japanese nationals and was a teacher's aide in the Department of Defense Dependent's Schools in the special needs department. I worked directly with middle school children who had ADD, ADHD as well as other physical handicaps including Cerebral Palsy. I have 3 children that I have had to help with their homework and projects throughout the years. I enjoy working with children and believe education is the key to developing responsible ... read more

Growing up the son of an English teacher, and a high school principal, education was obviously paramount in the home environment. I graduated from Indiana University with Business Degree, most of my work experience was in training and development of new employees, with a strong emphasis on demonstration, explaination and using real world applications. As a licensed commercial pool contractor, math, physics, chemistry, hydraulics, technical interpretation and common sense are all necessary skills used everyday in a real setting. Having two children in high school, I have been a math and science tutor for many years.
I remember thinking years ago: "What will I ever use this for?" In tutoring my children, sometimes their friends, in addition to training my employees, I strive to create excitement by showing a need and an application for new information. I tend to retain information ... read more
