As a teacher, I prefer a student-directed teaching style over a teacher-directed learning style in the classroom. I believe that setting up lessons where the students develop concepts and do most of the critical thinking is most important for their education, self-esteem and self-empowerment. The teacher is there to guide and mentor students to a preselected objective by asking well thought through questions and providing ideas to consider. I think all children are driven to learn, and if directed with a little help, everyone can learn how science changes peoples lives. I feel more like a coach and less like a lecturer. If you can make connections between things they know, and the things you are trying to teach them, they will have something to "hang" that new knowledge on!
