I begin by establishing rapport with the student, and usually I prefer a lighthearted, encouraging style of interaction. I believe every student is capable of learning, but may not have been shown the strategies and skills that will best suit them. I like to help the student identify their learning style, and then teach using strategies that will coincide with that learning style. Often when the student has been taught some different strategies for learning, s/he is more capable of tackling new lessons without additional help. As a Peace Corps Volunteer in Costa Rica, I learned that our goal was to "work ourselves out of a job." A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching to me is about how to engage the student. The material that is prepared for daily lessons can be nothing more than just words to some students. The instructor must become one with the student and understand them on their level. Once you can see eye to eye with your students, then you can begin to help them learn and grow. I learn right along with my students, gaining interpersonal skills from every student. The student's feedback and honesty helps me as an instructor meet the needs of future students. I have a wide variety of professional experience in addition to my educational background. I have nearly a quarter century of experience as an auditor, accountant, financial analyst, HR administrator, etc. My career has been spent at large corparations, small businesses, government agencies and as a free lance independent contractor.
I think the best way to teach is to try to find examples that my students will relate to when it comes to instruction. Students can have very different life experiences, which can help, or hinder, their ability to learn certain subjects. My role is to help those students that have difficulty with understanding certain subjects to work with them to come to an understanding of the material, and learn from it.
