My comments on tutoring Elementary Study Skills : I worked at the mathew dickey's boys' club with student's ranging from the 2nd through 6th grade on all subject matters. However, I'm naturally gifted in writing, grammar, physicology, biochemistry and anatomy. Relative to grammar, I was on the journalism team all four years of high school, serving as managaing editor, and sports editor, and was the only writer ot be granted free-lance editorial writing. Learning can be hard. Memorization can be hard. Knowing how to determine the proper equation to use in a chemistry or math equation can be hard. What I focus on with my students is not simply telling them the information and how they should go about finding the right answer but, more importantly, why the answer they are choosing is correct. What that does is to force them to learn the actual skill and when to use a given equation or what a sign or symbol indicates in terms of the type of problem they are trying to solve. By doing this, I find, the student is able to get to the core of not simply stuffing equations, grammar terms, or scientific terminology in their heads and then unloading them on the test. Elementary Study Skills is one of my top subjects! In addition to specific subjects normally associated with tutoring, such as math, reading, history, etc., most students need to be taught study and organizational skills as well. I have found through the years that all student success needs this basic, often neglected topic that helps in ALL school subject areas. I always include this vital topic no matter what else I tutor.

My comments on tutoring Elementary Study Skills : Study skills should be incorporated into the core curriculums. I teach study skills to students as they focus on each particular subject.

I have worked with children and teens all my life. I was a camp counselor at a YMCA camp for 6 summers in my teens and early 20s. I taught 5th grade my first year (class of 36 students!) and then taught 3rd grade for a year, 2nd grade for three years, and 4th grade for three years--all in public schools. Then I taught English at the middle school level for four years in a private school. After that I subbed and tutored for a year until I was hired to teach in a K-8 building at the 8th grade level. I taught there for nearly 20 years before I retired, teaching science, pre-algebra, and communication arts (English, reading, vocabulary, writing, grammar, and spelling.) While in that position, I was the sponsor of the science fair, building-wide, for nearly ten years. Since retirement, I have subbed, tutored, have written and published a book, and am writing a daily blog.
