My comments on tutoring Elementary Reading : I worked at the mathew dickey's boys' club with student's ranging from the 2nd through 6th grade on all subject matters. However, I'm naturally gifted in writing, grammar, physicology, biochemistry and anatomy. Relative to grammar, I was on the journalism team all four years of high school, serving as managaing editor, and sports editor, and was the only writer ot be granted free-lance editorial writing. Furthermore, during college and since I've taken my knowledge of pharmacoogy, biochemisry, chemistry, anatomy, etc. and have written several referenced articels for the online health magainze www.mindandmuscle.net under my name Tom Rayhawk

Learning can be hard. Memorization can be hard. Knowing how to determine the proper equation to use in a chemistry or math equation can be hard. What I focus on with my students is not simply telling them the information and how they should go about finding the right answer but, more importantly, why the answer they are choosing is correct. What that does is to force them to learn the actual skill and when to use a given equation or what a sign or symbol indicates in terms of the type of problem they are trying to solve. By doing this, I find, the student is able to get to the core of not simply stuffing equations, grammar terms, or scientific terminology in their heads and then unloading them on the test. Rather - and this is my main objective with each student - they understand why their answer is right. They LEARN. An easy way to test this is when quizzing them and browsing thei ... read more

My comments on tutoring Elementary Reading : I am a certificated reading specialist K-12

I love teaching. I earned my BA before I was old enough to vote. While my classmates were in his/her senior year, I was teaching. Eventually I earned my M.Ed. in Reading, then started School Administration and Adult Education. In all these fields I find similar necessary skills: patience, co-operation among staff and colleagues, knowledge of subject matter, communication with the community and parents and a well defined curriculum. Moreover, I am a published author and a former writer with St. Louis Globe Democrat - Suburban Journals. As a favor to my students, I often evaluate papers for submission. These students will always earn excellent grades.
I am a listener first and foremost. I want to know what my students expect from me and in what areas s/he regard as most essential to her/his success. I believe all people can learn and understand. It is a pleasure to watch students gr ... read more

I have the experience of substitute teaching, mentor St. Louis and tutoring in a nativity school. I am very patient with each student I meet and help them reach their goals. My expertise is in the area of early elementary education where their learning styles are being developed. I want to assist the students in learning so they do not fall through the cracks of of our school system. I will not put pressure on my students as I am there to help them be the best they can be. Progress is what needs to be strived for and not just perfection.

A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated from Princeton University with a BA (cum laude) in History and will be starting a Ph.D. program in History in the fall. I served as a tutor at the middle school level during my college years and have worked with High School students on History, English and ACT/SAT prep for the past year.I have also served in various other academically-related positions, including as a research assistant and library assistant.
I like to nurture my students without enabling them. I tend to ask my students pointed questions about the subject at hand to inspire critical thinking and push them to arrive at their own interpretation of the correct answer. I feel that this best prepares them for college-level work.

My comments on tutoring Elementary Reading : Dr. Ben Carson started his educational career reading those subjects which interested him the most. Reading is a gift we give to ourselves. Let's learn to do this with gusto!

An experienced teacher K-12, teaching reading, vocabulary, grammar, study skills, comprehension, math and science at one of St.Louis' local districts who moved on to teach at St. Louis Community College yet remains devoted to personal learning and learning projects. One of those recent learning project was incorporation of technology and personal computers in the classroom.
I believe in humor, fun, clear organization, and associated evaluation. I believe in preparing the student for life-long learning because learning is a pleasure, not a chore.

Tutoring without Tears.

Students learn best when they feel safe to explore and learn from past mistakes. In fact, 'mistakes' should be viewed as opportunities to improve skills and learning strategies. I use 'play therapy' most often to teach skills and strategies. Multiple studies have demonstrated that children learn best through play.
