I feel that I excel in putting myself in the student's shoes. By trying to understand their thought process, I can best teach by making sure the student follows the logic of the subject. I have always believed that allowing the student to reach understandings through subtle guidance by the teacher is the best process. This method allows students to retain information better and feel more comfortable with the material.

A Little Bit About Me...

Regardless of the demographics of the student population in the classroom, I have learned that it is as important to listen as it is to present information. I encourage participation in classromm subjects yet maintain control and functionality of the class so that the lesson is not lost in the discussion. It is rewarding to see the improvment of self esteem and knowledge when people become heard and are understood in a positive environment. The miracle of comprehension is akin to nurturing, encouraging and challenging an individual to blossom and bear fruit that can be enjoyed and savored by many.
I have spent a lifetime educating myself and participating in professional development and then giving back my knowledge and skills to those that may benefit. I have found that I frequently learn as much from those that I teach as they learn from me. My History degree is not only a passio ... read more

I really enjoy tutoring students one on one better than teaching in the classroom, because of the one on one contact, because I have found it helps take the pressure off the stuent to facilitate learning. Also, by taking a short time to learn myself about the person's background, it helps me to better understand how to best remove any obstacles that may be standing in the way. I am very patient, easy going, and I always try to empathize with my students when possible.
I first began tutoring under the direction of Nancy Donohue-Berthiaume at Quinsigamond College. I turored in Introductory Accounting, basic and college level mathematics. In my Sophmore symester, I was presented with a challenge. A young man who was both Dislexic, and Mathlexic was failing basic mathematics. Each student requires a different approach to teaching. With this in mind, I prefer to sit one on one and work from the bottom up to try to figure out exactly where some of the issues may be. Once you better understand what it is the student isn't following, you must find a new approach to explaining the topic and reviewing it. I also believe the student must research answers on his or her own. The ability to memorize something is helpful, but it is more important to know how to find the answer or work through an answer. Often times students just memorize answers without understanding the buildup to the answer.
While at Nichols College, I took a part time job at the local Boys & Girls club in Dudley Massachusetts. Here, I worked with children from a variety of backgrounds on their homework and various other projects especially mathematics in which I specialize in. Many of th ... read more
