A Little Bit About Me...

I am flexible in my teaching style because of my experience with professionals and the general public, and because of the diverse topics that I have studied. I like to make a difference when someone wants to learn.
As an Associate Research Professor at Duke University I conducted research on the health of the elderly population and the genetic background to age-related diseases. I am well published, always serving as my own statistician. The background to most common disorders in adults is complex involving multiple genes, thus I used advanced fuzzy latent class analysis to identify high and low risk sets of gene variants and to define the level of risk for individuals. I have collaborated with graduate students and taught genetcs to medical students. As a co-founder and the scientific director of Matrix Genomics, Inc. I relate genetic concepts to others on a daily basis.

In December 2009, I graduated cum laude from the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh with a BBA in Economics. While in school, I worked as a Supplemental Instructor for an introduction to business course, formulating and providing lessons to a group of undergraduate students. I also tutored individuals in both business and math. Additionally, I have several years of experience as a private music instructor, teaching lesson for guitar and music theory.
I believe that in order for students to obtain knowledge, they must develop some level of interest in the subject. My two and half years of teaching math and physics in high school as well as 8 years of college teaching taught me a great deal about encouraging learning. I also believe that my ability to communicate makes me especially well suited to help students achieve academically. My favorite age for tutoring is highschool to early college mathematics. I find that the values I have learned by becoming an engineer transfer greatly to sucess in mathematics. For instance, I provide the student with the correct mindset to solve math problems no matter if it is old or new material.
