I entered Brown University with a desire to become a teacher; the ancient world drew me into pursuing a degree in Ancient Philosophy, during which I studied Ancient Greek. After graduating, I spent two years in the Peace Corps in West Africa, where I taught villagers how to improve their nutrition and crop raising techniques. Upon returning, I decided to return to my original love for teaching, and entered the Master's program at CU in Teaching Latin. During my first year of learning Latin, I became a tutor to an undergraduate during a Teaching Methods course, and have since given long-term private instruction to 2 middle school students, 2 high school students, 3 undergraduates, and 2 adults. I am currently completing my MA in Professional Writing. I completed a BS in Interdisciplinary Studies with concentrations in English, Business, and Social Science in 2007 while working full time as a Senior Escrow Officer. I have trained colleagues over the past 20+ years in the areas of banking and title as an Assistant Vice President and Senior Escrow Officer. My experience in tutoring began in high school when I volunteered for my local library, in a program aimed towards improving students’ reading ability. Having had considerable difficulty learning to read myself, I felt it was important that I attempt to pass this on to others. When I entered Knox College I was focusing on English, and ended up helping my fellow students with writing and editing their papers.
I have always sought to lead rather than force something upon the student by rote. Most important is to present the information in a way that is both interesting and memorable. It is my experience that people remember things better when they truly understand the process, and have reason to listen to the explanation.

I held a valid OH teacher's certificate in 1992 but did not need it here in CO as I taught in private schools, so it has lapsed. I have maintained my own tutoring business over the last ten years and worked with students ages 5-14 (primarily 6-10) in subjects ranging from reading to math to study skills. My MEd gave me excellent awareness and insight into learning styles and child development, and the years of teaching have afforded me excellent success as an educator and classroom manager.
