I am an active teacher. I want students to understand the subject in the context of their own lives as opposed to just learning definitions. If they can realate the information to an actual happening, they are more likely to remember. In terms of test preparation, aside from learning the information it is important to work on test-taking skills (relaxation, focus, etc.). Being prepared for such large tests is more than just knowing, it is recalling under pressure. I work with all of that to help the student.

Since 1970, I have been teaching English in grades 7-12 in both Middle and High School. My teaching has encompassed helping students become proficient in both writing and reading skills. Teaching in Denver has challenged me to work effectively with students having limited English proficiency as well as learning disabilities, but I enjoy working with all students!
My strength as a teacher is in using scaffolding to help students gain confidence as a learner. What that essentially means is that I provide a great deal of support and modeling to students learning new skills and concepts. Gradually, as they become more advanced in learning, I remove those supports so they are performing more independently. That technique, along with lots of personal support, makes me an excellent teacher.
