A Little Bit About Me...

I am an English teacher who has taught all levels and abilities of students in grades 6-12 over the last 15 years. I graduated with my degree in Secondary English Education from the University of Central Florida in Orlando, FL, in 1998. I have been in the education industry, either as a teacher or trainer/facilitator ever since.
I like to allow students to opportunity to make sure all questions about topics being discussed. All students can succeed, but it is the responsibility of the student to be willing and ready for that success.

My teaching style is extremely fluid. I've found that adapting classes to the unique needs and interests of each individual student is the best way to making a lasting impact on their educational growth.
A lifelong lover of reading, writing, and language in general, I supported myself through college by tutoring other students in Spanish and helping them edit/write their papers. Since then, I have tutored students between grades 6 and 12 in English related subjects, including spelling, vocabulary, and general writing. The past four months, I lived in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua, where I spent two days a week tutoring local students in English as a second language, in addition to generally improving my Spanish skills.

I have experience working with both audio/visual learners and a kinesthetic/tactile learner. The kinesthetic/tactile learner had learning disabilities akin to ADD, but still did very well in the small group environment. I believe that children who want to learn will do so given the proper setting and sufficient time to succeed. I have very high patience for children who try hard and still struggle, but I do expect the student to give their best effort at each task.
I earned a Bachelor of Science from The Ohio State University in 1984. My subjects of passion were math and science and I enjoy working with children who struggle in those areas. I have home schooled my son through the end of 12th grade and he was ready for college freshman classes at age 15. As a graduate of the University of Texas at Dallas, I began teaching at W.W. Samuell High School in Dallas, Texas. At Samuell, I taught freshman English to inner city kids. Over the course of the 2 years I taught at Samuell, I used my passion for education and language arts to make lasting connections with my students. After the Army moved my husband to Colorado, I began working at the Fort Carson Education Center as an instructor of math and reading.
