Through my years of coaching and teaching, I have learned that a teacher must adapt his/her teaching style to the learning style of the student. I have done a lot of teaching and tutoring, both with adults and young people. Most of my experience, though, comes from working with high school and junior high school students. I spent the majority of that time as a tutor/ mentor and would work with the students one on one or in small groups, both in the library or in the classroom. It was really the most wonderful experience and I was able to provide tremendous benefits to the students on both an academic and personal level. I really do place something of a premium on being able to connect with all of my students on an academic and personal level. I believe that this helps them as they know that their teacher and tutor cares about them and their future and, as such, this causes them to grow and excel. For the past five years, I have worked in Minnesota as a Technical Writer for a small healthcare company and informally tutored family members and friends. From January, 1993 through August, 2000 I taught Writing: 115, 121, and 122, Portland, Oregon's Community College English Compostition sequence. My students composed essays which supported a thesis statement through structure appropriate to both thesis and audience.
