My comments on tutoring Genetics : Within the scope of general biology courses I have taught sections on genetics. I also have worked in genetic research labs.

In my career I have taught different levels of biology in a variety of settings to students ranging from preschoolers to adults. What started out as a college summer job teaching children at a St. Louis Zoo camp, grew into a career of being a conservation education coordinator at the Kansas City Zoo. One of my many responsibilities at that job was teaching teens and adults about our zoo animals and training them how to handle them. Besides developing and teaching classes on animals and ecology, I also mentored teens in the K.C. Zoo Explorer Post who were interested in zoo keeping as a career. A variety of instructional methods must be used to engage all students in learning. In order to help a child reach his or her potential, a teacher must be willing to acknowledge that student's learning style and work toward improving the child's weaknesses while also enhancing his or her strengths. I can usually find a way to relate the material that the student is struggling with to something else that they understand. When they can make connections to more familiar things, then they can think themselves through problems more effectively. I usually achieve this by showing them how to do a problem, doing a problem or two with them, and then having them do problems on their own, only assisting when they need it.
I have always picked things up quickly, more quickly than my peers. My peers have often come to me to ask for my help in those areas. I also see how to apply what I have learned to original problems because I see connections and hold a deeper understanding of the material. The most important thing to remember when teaching a child new concepts is patience. All children learn skills in different ways. Some catch on quickly, others need more time. Even the way in which you demonstrate how a problem is solved can make a difference. I usually try several methods for solving problems rather than insist that they learn the traditional methods only. The little bit of extra time spent giving them the optional techniques could make a world of difference in their educational success.
As a parent of two school-aged children I have had the oppurtunity to learn about the newest teaching methods employed by teachers at this time. We often work together on math and science.
