Sign Language is one of my top subjects! Certification in American Sign Language and Deaf Studies

I was previously a dance instructor, and understand the basic principles of advancing within a certain skill. I have the patience and determination to yield results from a young educator. I currently hold a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Speech and Language Pathology. Through my undergraduate degree at the University of Iowa, I have learned about many speech disorders and the processes and basic understandings of changing behavior. Within speech and hearing I found a passion for American Sign Language. I became certified in American Sign Language and Deaf Studies at the university of Iowa and would like to pursue a career involving Sign Language.

A Little Bit About Me...

For about year now have been teaching ASL and Interpreting for 6 years. I always have a deaf person accompany for the class. The particular one I would bring was born deaf and has superb skills in speech therapy. Therefore, she can read lips and is an excellent and patient instructor as well. She has a perfect balance of the hearing world and the spoken language and the deaf/hard of hearing world. She has previously worked as a nanny for 9 years and is excellent with teaching children ASL as well.
We like to teach in fun way not just conventional. If the student(s) have fun with they are learning, they are more likely to grasp and stick with it.

More About This Tutor...

I love teaching children and being able to see them learn. It is awesome to see and hear when they finally "get it" or when they understand something that I taught them. Moreover, when a student gives you an answer to a question and uses an example of something that you taught them earlier, it really shows you how quickly they can pick things up. My teaching "style" is very open--I will have an outline and while I am presenting I will sometimes ask for examples from the students to help get us through the outline together. You can't speak AT them; you have to involve the students in what you are teaching them.
Just recently, I worked with students in New Berlin, WI as part of the Junior Achivement program. While in High School and College, I worked with students in Madison at Whitehorse Middle School on Video Editing, PC Repair, Postmodernism, and Music. I have extensive skills in ... read more

I have wanted to be a teacher all my life. I love working with children and teaching. I believe that children are the future and should be given the opportunity to do well and succeed in school. I like to do my best to teach students how to do something and then let them discover and practice how to do it for themselves on their own. I feel that providing good instruction and then being there to assist when needed is the best way for students to learn. I also understand that all students learn differently, so I would include the student in determining what strategies work best for him or her.
Since graduating from Northern Illinois University, I have had several experiences teaching children at the elementary and middle school age. I was a nanny for a family of three for a year right after graduating. It was a wonderful experience and gave me the opportunity to create my own ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I enjoy working with children. However, every child learns in a different way. I feel that there are a variety of different ways for children to learn. Using the computer, hands on activities, field trips, and cooking to name a few. I feel that reading and language are very important for a child's development.
I earned my bachelors degree at Illinois State University in Early Childhood Education. I received and endorsement in special education as well. I taught Early Childhood Special Education for 9 years. I taught Pre-k for 2 years. During this time period I taught First grade summers school as well as helping Third graders prepare for the ISAT. I am going back for my ESL endorsement at Northeaster Illinois University now.
