Working in education since 2006 with ages 6 weeks to 18 years. I have student teaching experience from kindergarten thru 12th grade. I have substitute taught for kindergarten thru 12th grade as well. I have been enlisted in the Illinois Army National Guard since June 2012, and am currently enrolled in the Officer Candidate Program. My style of teaching varies with the child, their age, personality, subject, and amount of time we have. Besides teaching 2nd grade religion for 14 years my daughter has ADD. I have worked with kids who need to keep moving while they learn, to kids who need complete quiet. Some kids are more visual learners; others need to act the lesson out, while others do fine quietly reading. The important thing is to make it interesting so they WANT to learn. Older kids with a higher level of maturity don't require as entertaining a lesson. They want to see how to apply what they are learning to their life. To know there is a reason to learn makes them WANT to learn, understanding WHY they will need to know the information makes the learning easier. I believe the biggest key to learning is finding a way for students to relate to the information. Getting to know the student and relating thier interests to the material at hand is key to making a connection. I also believe it is critical to remain positive and supportive with students. At some point every student becomes frustrated by material that is challenging to them. By being able to keep students in a positive state of mind and by keeping the material fresh and fun, students will be more willing and able to continue the learning process. I am a recent graduate from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, with a BS in Business Administration - International Business and a focus in Chinese. Because this program is relatively new, a degree in International Business required multiple Finance courses, which allowed me to learn many advanced statistical and mathematical concepts. In these classes, I often assumed an informal tutor role and helped my fellow students understand difficult points.
