A Little Bit About Me...

During my undergrad studies at UWRF, I was sponsored to become a tutor in the Writing Center on campus. There was a prerequisite practicum, but it was very hands-on learning. I worked with students from a variety of backgrounds (ESL, freshman comp, MS candidates, etc). At Metro State I participated in a semester program teaching English in Puerto Rico, for which I received the ESL certification. I also TA'd for Writing and Designing for the Web.
I am a very adaptable teacher--I can easily pick up on a student's needs and abilities, and work to their strengths in that way. I enjoy not only helping them learn, but also their backstory and considering how it affects their learning style. I also have an innate love of learning, and feel that it's a great gift to help someone realize their own potential.

I prefer a casual learning environment, one that includes appropriate humor and an appreciation for students' individuality. Because I have had the opportunity to work with students of many different ages and abilities, I have learned that there is no "right" way to teach/tutor. As a tutor I have had to adjust my teaching style depending on the type of student I am working with. What works for one student may not necessarily work with another. For example, if a student has a lackadaisical attitude, I will do what I can to try to motivate him/her. Other students may be very motivated, but may need help with focusing, organizing or other key skill. With all students, I try to be as patient as possible and as clear as I possibly can when I am explaining material.
