A Little Bit About Me...

My degree in English at Rhodes meant that I studied a wide variety of literature, taking both analytical courses and courses that encouraged me to take what I learned from these writers and apply it to my own writing, further developing my skills as a writer, both creatively and as an analytical thinker. This culminated in my senior year, when I studied literary theory and criticism in my senior seminar, and when I was approved to write a manuscript for my senior writing project, for which I received an A, as well as an academic award: the Allen B. Tate Award for Achievement in Writing, Fiction. In high school, my project for National Honors Society was tutoring at a local elementary school and througout college, I volunteered to tutor with various programs.
I absolutely love working with children and will be sensitive to your child's needs and wants, and demonstrate a great deal ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My BA degree was in Speech & Theatre. Who would have known that a shy kid like me would have excelled in public speaking, english, and theatre. I love the English language, even though I've had classes in French and Spanish. I started school when I was 4 years old (too early), and all my grade school years was challanged with education. Now that I am an adult, I feel that I have the experience to help children understand and find it easier to learn English and grammer, sentence writing, composition writing, essays, etc.
Laid back, but encouraging. If a child is struggling, I don't think you should add fear and criticism to the situation. Having had Catholic nuns in all my grammer school days, pretty much put the "fear of God" into me, until I went on to public high school and college. then I was able to relax and embrace english and literature.

During my course of study, I learned exceptional grammatical and writing skills due to the numerous papers regard spanning many topics. A variety of instructional methods must be used to engage all students in learning. In order to help a child reach his or her potential, a teacher must be willing to acknowledge that student's learning style and work toward improving the child's weaknesses while also enhancing his or her strengths. As a middle school teacher for the past two years, I have discovered that most students learn best and most profoundly when they are allowed to partipate in their own learning instead of just taking orders.
As a student at Grinnell College, I was motivated to achieve at a high level. During my four years of college, I earned a BA in French and Biology. I also spent four months during my third year studying in France, where I lived with a host mother and attended classes at a local university. Currently, I am working toward earning my Master's Degree in Education at the University of Miss ... read more

In the classroom I like to find the balance between high energy learning and thoughtful practice. As a tutor I have found that I am friendly and understanding and that these characteristics help students relax and learn. I feel that I am funny, but I have seen my fair share of middle school eye rolls and sighs! My goal is to see children learn and achieve in education and I believe educational progress is something a teacher should see after spending time with a student. I feel that I am a memorable teacher and that I have left a positive impression on each and every student that I have had contact with over the last 10 years.

A Little Bit About Me...

I recently completed graduate work in English at Texas A&M University, where I studied primarily in the digital humanities and digital pedagogy: I wrote my master's thesis on the new role of images in digital studies and worked on a project dealing with the integration of blogs and wikis in composition classrooms. I obtained assistantship positions for both of my two years at Texas A&M, first working as the assistant editor for Kosmas, a peer-reviewed journal, then teaching two sections of English 104, a composition class for college freshmen. My GPR in graduate school was 4.0. I received my bachelor's degree from a small yet renowned liberal arts college, the University of Dallas, to which I received a full tuition scholarship. I tutored, reported for the campus newspaper, and worked for the school library during my undergraduate years, and graduate cum laude with a degree in English. ... read more

I enjoy every aspect of teaching. I began in 1987 as a teacher's aide in Georgia. I was later able to return to college to complete my degree in Elementary Education. I have worked as a preschool teacher, elementary teacher, middle school and high school teacher, and I have tutored in Reading, Math, and Science. Much of my methods are based on what I have experienced through the years.
I have worked with many different types of learners so it is not difficult for me to pinpoint what learning styles they have. As a teacher, it is my job to communicate effectively and conform to a student's unique qualities in achieving academic successes.
