A Little Bit About Me...

I worked with the Minnesota Literacy Council tutoring adult learners in basic math and reading skills. I attempted multiple approaches with each person until we found one that allowed the learner to make sense of the symbols and language. I encouraged the ability to work at the material until the learner could make it his/her own in some way. I also trained new employees each month in the use of a software program at a pharmaceutical company. Employees were required to learn the program regardless of experience and ability with computer programs. I was challenged to engage disinterested employees, encourage frustrated employees, and meet the demands of highly inquisitive employees while maintaining focus on the required information.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that everyone learns in a different way so I approach teaching with a very adaptable style that adjusts to the person or people I am teaching. My approach to teaching science is to begin by applying the basic principles of biology and chemistry to everyday life. I believe it’s easier to understand these subjects when they are related to human health and current events. I also try to create an environment where students felt comfortable asking questions and open discussions are encouraged. I student taught in a fourth grade classroom this past semester. The classroom consisted of 29 students. I taught all subjects and incorporated many hands on experiences with each subject. I have taught second, third, fourth, and sixth grades. I was a camp counselor for five summers. During this experience I lead a cabin of females for a week at a time. I believe that people learn in different fashions. For example, I feel that some concepts may be better explained with tangible objects while other concepts are learned better when questioned and discussed. By exploring the different ways of learning we can find what works best for that individual and use that method as a tool for their understanding.
