A Little Bit About Me...

I have recently received my Ph.D. in biochemistry from the laboratory of Prof. F. Peter Guengerich at Vanderbilt University. I am seeking a teaching position near my family in Minnesota. I was a chemistry tutor in college for two years and I have spent a great deal of time informally teaching in the laboratory in graduate school. In addition to teaching one semester at the local community college, I also mentored two graduate students in our laboratory.
My approach to teaching science is to begin by applying the basic principles of biology and chemistry to everyday life. I believe it’s easier to understand these subjects when they are related to human health and current events. I will ask a student some questions to find out what they know about the subject. I listen carefully for clues to potential obstacles the student is facing. How the student feels about the subject is affected by perception of difficulty and personal ability, and by perception of importance. I want the student to gain a sense of accomplishment as early as possible in order to establish self-motivation. I work to establish in the student a base of knowledge or experience, and I teach the student how to use that as a springboard for learning further material and solving puzzles or resolving questions. Keeping the student aware of the larger context for the material is a constant habit as well.
