My comments on tutoring Genetics : I took this course during my undergraduate studies at UCSD, receiving an A in the course.

I worked as an Undergraduate Instructional Apprentice (UGIA)/Tutor at UCSD for the courses of Nutrition and AIDS, Science, and Society. In my role as a UGIA/Tutor, I was responsible for leading a weekly (sometimes biweekly) discussion section with a group of students in which I reviewed course material that was taught by the professor in their respective courses as well as providing worksheets and writing quizzes to help the students learn the material covered in lecture. In addition to these discussion sections, I also held weekly office hours to assist students in regards to answering any questions they may have had about course material as well as run review sessions along with other UGIAs/Tutors to help prepare students prior to their exams.
First, I begin by answering any questions a student has about the material they are learning. Once all questions are answered, I usually l ... read more

Teaching is a great way to educate and to learn. As a tutor, first, I see the student’s understanding level. I plan ahead of time and prepare proper material. However, if the material is provided, I find effective methods of teaching, and teach each student accordingly. It’s obvious that some techniques work better for some students but not others. Therefor, I choose a good teaching method, and assist students to learn the material better, faster and easier.
As a recent graduate of San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and minor in Psychology, I have taken many classes in biology, physics, algebra, psychology, chemistry as well as organic chemistry. I learned how to plan, provide and educated students by teaching and tutoring sciences and English classes for four years. Throughout my working experiences, I learned how to manage and organize an efficient ... read more

I am a recent graduate from UCSD that majored in Human Biology and Psychology. I have 5 cumulative years of tutoring in a variety of subjects. I consider math my forte (from Algebra to Precalculus and Calculus), but I am more than proficient in other areas of science including biology, chemistry and physics. I have been tutoring since high school and but my earliest tutoring experiences began at home where I tutored my 4 siblings. I am easy going and will try my best to meet at your convenience and accommodate any needs. I am eager to help students achieve their maximum potential in math and science. It brings me much joy to see the look on a students face as they grasp a concept that they once looked upon with much adversity.
I prepare for tutoring sessions by asking any prospective students to please send me their study material prior to our sessions (at least a day please!). ... read more

I am personally, a visual learner. I try to teach or tutor students in this way as well. If you can visualize what is being shown, then it correlates much better with what you read in the subject books. I love teaching and show enthusiasm in math and science when I talk about it. I hope for this to transfer to the students and help them be interested in learning more. My favorite part is when a student's face lights up after a concept is understood. I believe I can help students improve their knowledge by tailoring the study guides to each students individual needs.
I have one year of experience teaching at the junior college level at Victor Valley College. I created and gave lectures on various chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry topics as well as conducted lab sections for students. I strive to have open lines of communication between my students and myself. I think it is the most important aspect of teaching and learning. My students should always feel comfortable coming to me with their questions and I should always be honest about the answer. Some teachers will make an educated guess about the answer to some questions when they do not know the answer. To me, this is wrong. I am not afraid to admit when I don't know something, and will make an effort to find the answer to these questions. I also have found it very important to show enthusiasm for the subject and faith in the capability of the student when teaching. A good teacher can turn a student on to a subject or, at least, help a student to pass a course they never thought they could.
During high school I acquired my first teaching position. I figure skated as a hobby and had been working at my ... read more

I have a BS in Supply Chain Management from Arizona State University, and have been pursuing a Biochemistry degree from the University of San Diego with an expected completion date of May 2012. During my studies I have become very knowledgeable in the sciences, particularly Biology, Chemistry, and Organic Chemistry. I recently took the Dental Admissions Test (DAT) and scored in the 93rd percentile. The DAT measures ability in Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Reading Comprehension, Algebra, and Geometry among other subjects. I have worked with students in a small class setting, and one-on-one for about a year, and feel very comfortable in my ability to help students achieve their educational goals.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have tutored HS 9-12 and undrgraduate students individually in Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics and for SAT/ACT testing since the late 1990's. I received teaching credentials for teaching 9-12 Mathematics in California in 2005. I have worked as a Math/Sciences substitute in the Grossmont Union High School District since that time. I have also worked with A+ Professional Tutoring -- in San Diego County -- and Tutor.com -- online -- for many years, in every level of the Sciences and Mathematics.
I love Mathematics and I often wear my heart on sleeve; when it comes to Math, I try to infect the student with that bug. I believe that most students have issues with their immediate teaching and, as a result, feel that math has no meaning to them, hence I teach Mathematics in a contextual manner, showing deep meaning for the drills imposed in the classroom curriculums most experie ... read more

I finished my lower division coursework at a california community college (AHC) and earned a total of six associate degrees. While at the community college, I administered practice test for students in MESA in mathematics (Calculus 1,2,3, and 4) while also working the maximum of 20 hours a week in the campus math lab (walk-in tutoring). Furthermore, I attended and graduated from UCLA with a bachelor's degree in physics and a minor in mathematics and finished the necessary coursework to apply to all medical school programs in to the country. I tutored for side money while attending UCLA. Currently, I'm a graduate student at SDSU. I'm two courses and a Master's thesis away from receiving my Master's degree in Physics.

I love interaction and try to encourage as much participation as possible by asking questions. I feel that people learn best when they have an active role in the process. I also try to explain things with analogies as often as possible and have found that what might seem like a very simple analogy can often be the best way to "unlock" a person's ability to understand a concept. I have also learned that teaching is all about communication, and believe it is more that helpful to try and adopt one's communication style to meet different ways different people have of understanding.
I love teaching and explaining new ideas. Even as a Biology student at Point Loma Nazarene University, I was working with other students to study in groups and always learned best by teaching the things I understood. A Little Bit About Me...

As a student, I loved school so much so that I went on to get a graduate degree in science. Science and writing have been huge parts of my professional career (non-tutoring) and I have worked with government research entities, an environmental consulting company and now with a non-profit that focuses on public education and outreach. My specialties are two-fold: 1) I have an extensive science background and the ability to share this in an effective way with kids; biology was my favorite course in college and I love to revisit it; 2) I have personal and professional experience working with kids of all ages that are having difficulty getting what they need out of the classroom.
My approach to tutoring is that all students want to learn, even if they act otherwise. It is my job to make the subject more relevant, interesting and understandable for them. I assume everyone is cap ... read more

I enjoy both the one on one mentoring and also engaging students in small groups and as an entire classroom. The one on one mentoring gives me a feel for the best way for that particular student to learn, therefore I can adjust my teaching style to their strengths.
I really enjoy working with students and I feel that education is the most important aspect of an individuals life. I have taught at John W. North High School in Riverside, Ca. One of my assignments was to fill in for an AP Statistics teacher while she was on maternity leave. Since that day I have feel in love with biostatistics and took all of my graduate level electives in Biostatistics courses.

I am a patient teacher that understands that some concepts are not easily understood and simply repeating yourself without changing your tack will not bring about understanding. Providing real world examples that are relevant to a student's interests is one powerful way to encourage learning. With regards to math and science, I've often found that abstract theoretical concepts are more difficult to understand, whereas practical examples are more easy to visualize. Whenever possible, I try to create scenarios that apply in the real world so that the student can understand and apply the concept in the future.

As a graduate of the University of Colorado at Boulder in Integrative Physiology, I love learning and I love helping others learn! I find biology so incredibly fascinating and find so much satisfaction in helping others to succeed. I was a math tutor and mentor throughout high school and never formally tutored in college, but took every opportunity I could to help anyone who needed help understanding the material. I also have a strong math and chemistry.

I have more than an academic interest when I tutor, and thus really care about helping an individual in the way that they need it.
