I taught preschool for 5 years and had a home day care center for 4 years. I have worked as a paraprofessional at Springfield Elementary for the 3 years and was an after school tutor for the SES program for 2 terms for two different companies. Although I have not yet applied for certification, I am eligible for certification for Elementary Education as I have passed the FTCE K-6 certification exam.

"It isn't rocket science," is often the reply when asked why some kids have such a difficult time learning to read. I'll have to disagree, because for some kids the process of learning to read is just as complex. That's why it is so necessary for a reading teacher of struggling students to explore all avenues when providing remedial instruction. What clicks for one student might not work for another. After graduating college, I served in the US Army for six years as a Chemical Defense Officer. My primary duty was to ensure that all 17,000 soldiers in the 1st Cavalry Division were trained and equipped to properly deal with chemical and biological hazards. To effectively and efficiently complete this duty, I was constantly teaching, coaching and mentoring both fellow officers as well as enlisted soldiers. We had circle time, learned the basics, how to share, give, receive, pray, hug and make friends. Many of the things in life that we don't "get" are things we don't understand. When teaching, I try to break things down and simplify them so they can be easily understood. Often the kids in my class are those who do not like to be challenged, so I incorporate a lot of questions to provoke thinking and problem solving on their own. Since repetition is a key component to learning, I review a lot which requires patience but pays great dividends in the long run. I try to keep things fresh and fun by adding a lot of variety, and also like to motivate with real-world examples so students can see a practicle use for what they are learning.
