Since my sophomore year of high school, I have been helping my peers in subjects related to science and math. I helped the biology teachers create quizzes, grade papers, and provide after-school academic assistance to students. During my first semester of college, I participated in the Triunfo/Triumph Tutoring Program through El Centro Student Services at Colorado State University. This program targets K-5 grade students in the Poudre School District who need mentors to guide them with their studies. Throughout the remainder of my undergraduate experience (and even currently as a graduate), I am helping me peers understand concepts taught in college chemistry (general and organic), biology, and various levels of math.

As a teacher’s assistant for photography in high school, I realized that I had a natural aptitude for teaching and breaking subjects down into manageable parts. In college, I was the person that other students came to for guidance with difficult topics, from mathematical equations to evolutionary theory. Since I earned my BS in wildlife biology, I have taught in many capacities, including as a substitute teacher and as a trainer for new employees. I have taught discouraged children to read and fostered latent talents. As a tutor for the Interfaith Refugee Ministry, I worked with children and adults from all over the world, including a woman from Zimbabwe who was studying to earn her GED, but struggled just to create a complete sentence in English. I enjoy making the ancient world come alive to students, whether they are in elementary school or adults. Because learning Latin is a challenging endeavor, it provides ample opportunity to help the learner develop better study skills and therefore more confidence in themselves as a learner, which I believe is helpful to students as they make their way in life no matter where it takes them.
