Since my sophomore year of high school, I have been helping my peers in subjects related to science and math. I helped the biology teachers create quizzes, grade papers, and provide after-school academic assistance to students. During my first semester of college, I participated in the Triunfo/Triumph Tutoring Program through El Centro Student Services at Colorado State University. This program targets K-5 grade students in the Poudre School District who need mentors to guide them with their studies. Throughout the remainder of my undergraduate experience (and even currently as a graduate), I am helping me peers understand concepts taught in college chemistry (general and organic), biology, and various levels of math.

You have to help students see that it is possible to overcome personal difficulties with specific subjects. To do this, I focus on each learner’s strengths and break topics down into manageable parts. I ask the questions that will direct each student to make connections on their own. I enjoy taking a complex grammatical point, and breaking it down so that the student fully understands it and it is no longer a mysterious or illogical fact of language.
