I first find out your true objective for learning the material. Is it a requirement and not in your field of study so you just want to pass the class or is this a part of your passion or career and really want to know the nuts and bolts of the subject. I will adjust accordingly and make out a plan. I will also figure out the best way to teach you the material and from there we will have a plan to accomplish the targeted goal.
I have a lot of experience not only in fields that you may need help learning, but I also spent time during college tutoring classmates as I was in the class and developed a style to help students learn quickly and also reinforce the concepts. I believe that a big part of teaching is listening and observing. Not every student learns the same way, so it is important to be patient and try to understand what works best for the student. In many cases, examples are helpful in learning. Examples that are tailored to a specific student (e.g. drawing correlations to cooking for measurements, or sports for averages) can be a great basis for understanding concepts. I have done classroom teaching and one-on-one teaching. I prefer the one-on-one approach because it is so effective, and so satisfying for myself and the student when progress is made.

Facilitating good rapport allows me to understand a student’s strengths and weaknesses and allows focus on the weak areas. For example, does the student primarily utilize rote memorization or is he/she capable of a higher level of critical thinking? Someone who is more familiar with memorization as a way of learning can be taught to expand their understanding of the subject if the right questions are asked to them.
