A Little Bit About Me...

It is important to teach children with appropriate strategies and techniques to maximize their success. I use visual aids to make the lesson interesting. I teach with Orton Gillingham approach, multi-sensory and kinesthetic style.
I have B.Sc. in Fine Arts with a minor in Special Education from Texas Women's University; a B.F.A in Graphic Design from the University of Kansas; and M.F.A in Painting and Textiles from Texas Women's University. I have a Teacher's Certificate in Elementary Education from Kenya.. I had enrolled in classes toward LD Licensure and have completed the coursework at Greenhills for the Associate level membership in AOGPE. I have taught at Greenhills for sixteen years. As seen from above, I have valid tutoring experience in both middle grades and HS. I was in the student teaching program at Wake Forest and upon graduation, I was a substitute teacher in the Winston-Salem, Forsyth County School system. I also participated in the Junior Achievement program in the Piedmont NC region for over 5 years. I am currently a tutor with the "No Child Left Behind Program."
I am a disciplinarian. I have an excellent ability to gain a students attention, keep it and the results of my students have been well above average. I have a knack to bring into the classroom, outside events (latest ball games, Olympics, etc.) to establish a 'bond' between myself and the student. This allows me to gain their confidence as well as not create a bored atmosphere. I find this very important, especially with the more difficult students.

I have an open style to teaching. I believe that if you show someone the subject; allow them to do the task along with taking notes that they retain most of the information. I also strongly believe that the learning environment needs to be fun and enjoyable. I also give my students small test throughout the class, and then give them an exam at the end. I also encourage them to ask questions at any time throughout the course.
