My old next door neighbors have two children. One is a boy in elementary and one is a girl in middle school. I tutored the boy in reading and writing. He was able to read his first book on his own after a few weeks with me. I had to tutor the girl in math. she was taking algebra and was having a tough time with it. In two weeks of many meetings, she was able to pass her final exam. No matter what grade I was in, I always enjoyed going down to the ESE room and helping the special kids. I did what ever I could to help.

I create my own notes to explain the textbook concepts and my own problems that are similar to what the student will be tested on. I like to use index cards, poster board, and whatever else will help bring the concepts to life for the student. My explanations change depending on what life experience the student has. A Little Bit About Me...

I have been working with children for more than 20 years, as a tutor and mentor. My profession and academic education was in business and psychology, but my passion has always been working with children. For the last 7 years, I have worked as a substitute teacher, for Lee County Schools. And for the last 5 years, I have spent my summer months traveling throughout SE Asia, volunteering time in orphanages and schools, teaching the children English.
My teaching style totally depends on the student(s) that I am working with. Not all children learn at the same pace, nor do they all have the same attention span. That said, I find that applying the “token economy” approach, in getting the children to focus on the task, is very effective. If given time and patience, children are capable of accomplishing most anything.

While living in Japan, I taught English to the Japanese nationals and was a teacher's aide in the Department of Defense Dependent's Schools in the special needs department. I worked directly with middle school children who had ADD, ADHD as well as other physical handicaps including Cerebral Palsy. I received my BS in 1978 and my continuing certificate 3 years later. I have worked with youth(6th grade-12th grade) in a classroom setting. I have also worked with adult learners to re-train them for the workplace. Another population of students I have worked with were imprisoned youth aged 13-21.
