I am a creative person and love to bring that creativity into the tutoring session. I create my own notes to explain the textbook concepts and my own problems that are similar to what the student will be tested on. I like to use index cards, poster board, and whatever else will help bring the concepts to life for the student. My explanations change depending on what life experience the student has. A person who has been in the business community for twenty years will have a different perspective than a nineteen year old who has never worked. The purpose of tutoring is to use what the student knows to help explain the concepts.

My old next door neighbors have two children. One is a boy in elementary and one is a girl in middle school. I tutored the boy in reading and writing. He was able to read his first book on his own after a few weeks with me. I had to tutor the girl in math. she was taking algebra and was having a tough time with it. In two weeks of many meetings, she was able to pass her final exam. No matter what grade I was in, I always enjoyed going down to the ESE room and helping the special kids. I did what ever I could to help.

All through high school and college I was a tutor. I have taken numerous writing extensive courses. This qualifies me to tutor English. I have also taken many courses that concentrated on Social Studies. Science was always one of my favorite courses in high school, therefore I took a few science courses in college as well. I have previously tutored students in test preparation, and I have taken the FCAT myself. Math was another strong subject of mine, and I have also tutored students in this area as well.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been working with children for more than 20 years, as a tutor and mentor. My profession and academic education was in business and psychology, but my passion has always been working with children. For the last 7 years, I have worked as a substitute teacher, for Lee County Schools. And for the last 5 years, I have spent my summer months traveling throughout SE Asia, volunteering time in orphanages and schools, teaching the children English.
My teaching style totally depends on the student(s) that I am working with. Not all children learn at the same pace, nor do they all have the same attention span. That said, I find that applying the “token economy” approach, in getting the children to focus on the task, is very effective. If given time and patience, children are capable of accomplishing most anything.
