Elementary Reading is one of my top subjects! Lessons include reading comprehension skills such as determining main idea, making inferences, understanding causes and effects, etc. I also teach students to use reading strategies like visualizing, making connections, and questioning.
My teaching style is one of facilitator. I like to emphasize student-centered learning giving students the responsibility to take the initiative for meeting the demands of various learning tasks.
However, I am aware that many times with my regular education students and the students that I tutor, I am a combination of facilitator and demonstrator with an emphasis on demonstration and modeling. I guide students in developing and applying their skills.
I have been teaching in a public school in the Sugar Land area for 27 years. For the past 10 years, I have taught both regular education and GT students in the English Language Arts block. Many of my former students were waived ESL intermediate students whose grasp of reading and writing grew within the time spent in my class. The students that I tutor have always shown tremendous growth in ability and confidence.
