Math and Science Tutor high school to college age.

Flexible, I try to adapt the material to the student's learning style and needs. Emphasizing the points that they get, and using analogies to clarify the information as needed. I love working in small groups and seeing people "get it."
Tutored for about ten years as needed. Experience with high school and college math and science. I am working toward a nursing degree and intend to complete a degree in mathematics education for high school ages. My past tutoring experience has included all high school math and Calculus 1 for college, for science I have experience in tutoring chemistry primarily. However, I'm comfortable tutoring in anatomy and physiology if the need arises.

Throughout my high school career I have been devoted to academic success of my fellow classmates as well as my self. I continued this attitude in the accomplishment of achieving a BS degree in biology. Along the way of my academic success I have acquired multiple skills in every subject that has added to my love of learning and discovering. Over a fifteen year period I have used the knowledge that I have obtained to aid in others in their own pursuit of academic achievement.
I take the necessary time to learn the behavior and learning ability of the child in order to customize a teaching style that will be most beneficial. I believe that the most effective type of relationship between a teacher and a student is friendship to reduce any anxieties that may otherwise hinder the child’s progress. I am calm, well mannered, kind and devoted to the success of others. Teachers should be fi ... read more

I love teaching and sharing my love of science with others. Children learn in many different ways; some through reading, some through diagrams, and some through repetition. I enjoy trying to figure out how each child learns and I am willing to try as many different techniques as possible. I try to relate to my student to see how they learn best. I have learned through personal experience that learning comes easiest to a student if it is fun and taught in an engaging manner; through a video, a funny acronym, or relation to a personal experience or something that interests the student. I am patient, easy going, and understanding.
I am currently a student at Wright State University; I will have a Bachelor’s degree in biology at the end of summer 2010. I have taken several classes in Cell biology, Molecular biology, Animal biology and Plant biology. I have also had a year of ana ... read more

I have a passion for education and helping others. I also love math and problem solving. I have earned my BS in Business with a major in MIS, and have completed many extra math classes. I tutored all through college when I went (at the high school and college level). I have enjoyed teaching my daughter and others her age (elementary level), and have learned a lot about learning styles. Education is extremely important to me, and I would really like to help others in this area.
The most important thing to me in teaching anyone anything is finding out what level they are currently at. In order to learn something, take something in and understand it, one must have something already to attach it to in their minds. I like to adapt my teaching to the personality and learning style of whoever I am teaching, and think that a big part of teaching is help and encouragement. I have a ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

During the past four years, I have tutored students in all subjects. During my collegiate years at Bucknell University, I majored in Biology and minored in Education and Philosophy. I also spent a few hours a week tutoring students of all grade levels in a variety of subjects, specifically math and reading. I taught physical science at Findlay High School for the past two years. Outside of the teaching day, I held small group and individual tutoring sessions for ninth grade students in physical science. With my educational and teaching background I am confident that I will be an effective tutor for all subjects and grade levels.
I believe that all students have the right to a quality education and deserve opportunities to reach their maximum academic potential before graduating high school. While some students may reach their potential in a school environment alone, other stude ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

In my 6 years of teaching experience I’ve come to find out that there is no such thing as a “stupid question.” Each child or adult has a specific way of learning according to their own character. That’s the reason some are faster to learn mathematical concepts while others are faster in literary concepts. I believe in going slow and asking my students to explain what they’ve learned in their own words. If they can do this easily it means they have mastered the concepts. I usually encourage pre-reading before tutoring sessions. A student who has read the chapter ahead will absorb information more easily than one who has not read ahead.
I obtained a high honors degree (Magna Cum Laude) in Biology, with a minor in Chemistry in 2005. Due to an outstanding GPA (3.74/4.00), I began to teach even as an undergraduate student. I was hired by the Athletics Department to help my fellow studen ... read more

I have always felt that tutoring should offer a much more laid-back approach at getting concepts across to students. This is a chance to learn material in an environment that doesn't bear the pressures and stresses of the classroom and achieving a certain grade. Also as opposed to a classroom, I feel that the student should have the floor. This is their time to ask questions and talk through problems. When doing problems, I usually like to ask questions that gradually lead up to the answer and establish the concepts to get to the solution. Finally, I like tutoring experiences to be fun and am not afraid to lighten the mood with occasional jokes, as it seems that this atomosphere makes students more open and excited to learn the given material.
Throughout my undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois, I developed a passion for teaching and helping others achieve the ac ... read more

My teaching style is customized to each student's needs. Because all students have different learning styles my instructions are patterned to maximize that student's particular style. After evaluating each student with a baseline test, goals and objectives based on the state's/district's curriculum are determined. My style is setting high but realistic expectations with rigorous assignments. I also try to have an overdose of encouragement and make the learning session fun time for students.

A Little Bit About Me...

The manner in which I strive to help a student is first of all to just listen. Find out what is most important to them about the material. Next, speak calmly and confidently that any problems they are encountering can be resolved. Go step by step over what needs to be done, and review as much material as is necessary to bring the student up to a level of comprehension that brings confidence to the student. One important component of helping a student learn is to help the student to see that they can do the work.
The wonder of learning was insilled within me at a very young age by my parents within the warm home-schooled atmosphere they created. My formal school training began at the level of 8th grade, college at 15, BS Physics, and presently persuing MS Physics. Math and physics are heavily rooted in problem solving, so I tend to focus on the problems because if you can solve the problems, then you understand the material. It can be easy to “understand in class” and then get confused on the homework. I work to bridge that gap. When students come to me with a problem, the first thing I ask them is this: “What is it that you do not understand?” Many times they don't know, and that's okay. That's why the tutor is there! So I press on: “Tell me what you do understand; tell me whatever you can about this problem.” And so they tell me everything they can. It gets them thinking, applying theory, and often times they understand quite a bit! They just need help filling in the holes here and there!

More About This Tutor...

The goal of my approach is to enable students to have a level of ownership in learning concepts and ideas. Merely teaching the idea is not enough, and that "Oh, I see" moment must occur to embed the idea for long-term growth. I enjoy relating the ideas and facts to real world examples that almost anyone can grasp.
For a period of five years, I offered tutoring services to students at the University of Chapel Hill, Duke University, and North Carolina State University. My ability comes from experience...I was not entirely prepared for college when I started, and had to work much harder to successfully complete my degrees. I believe that this has given me a great insight into what students really need, especially as schools continue to do a less than perfect job of preparing students for the future.
