I started substitute teaching when I was in undergraduate school just as a source of income and because I like teaching. My mother is a retired teacher who taught for over 30 years. I work as an engineer but I always find time to tutor. I have tutored with an SES program and have found that this worked really well. Focusing on how the children learn as a method to approach how they should be tutored is very effective and the children learn.
I have substitute taught for over 16 years and this past year I worked with the SES program tutoring. My areas of focus are sciences and maths but I have had to tutor reading. This year I tutored middle school students but I have tutored elementary as well. I tend to focus on the high level maths and sciences often taking long term positions in high school.

While working as a private tutor, I was able to work one-on-one with an emotionally troubled teen, which helped me to learn that everyone learns at different speeds and in different ways. I was able to implement several learning strategies, until we found one that was most conducive to his learning. During my peer tutoring time at Brevard College, I had the opportunity to work with a handful of special needs students, including a form of autism. I loved the work I did as a private tutor, because I feel like you can get to know the student. I was able to encourage the teen to persue his interest in the theatrical arts. I enjoy working with children and understand that everyone has a unique learning style. An effective teacher works with this while exercising patience, care and consideration for students as they guide them to subject mastery. My preferred method of teaching is show and do. I show the technique or concept, and then give the student a chance to practice and demonstrate that they understand. The student learns best when they can find or develop the answer themselves.
