My style of teaching is one that strives to bring an overall understanding of the importance and relevance of the subject at hand. I believe children, as well as all people, learn much better and have much greater retention when they understand the bigger picture involved and understand why it is important to learn the subject at hand. I believe in relating the topics to something the pupil can understand and therefore grasp. One of my greatest teachers was a chemistry professor who was able to explain a complicated chemistry concept in terms of a McDonald's Happy Meal. It was something we all could relate to and understand. Furthermore, if I can relate why learning the particular topic is important, then I believe the child will become excited and be much more apt to retain and retell the information to others. My goal is to understand where each student is in their larger journey as a writer, as well as where he or she is in terms of the immediate work. I believe strongly in flexibility and patience as a teacher, in remaining open to what students say and to implementing new approaches when necessary. I listen carefully to what a student is struggling with and to his or her history as a writer, before I form a practical plan for improvement. The goal is not only to get through one or two papers, but to identify recurring problems and to understand why this particular student is struggling with these specific areas.
