My comments on tutoring Genetics : Within the scope of general biology courses I have taught sections on genetics. I also have worked in genetic research labs.

The defining characteristic of my teaching method, whether in a classroom or tutoring individual students, is fostering a respectful and comfortable learning environment. I believe that the foundation for this environment is created by establishing small, personal connections with the student. I try to take every opportunity to get to know a student’s’ personal interests. As a student at Grinnell College, I was motivated to achieve at a high level. During my four years of college, I earned a BA in French and Biology. The most important thing to remember when teaching a child new concepts is patience. All children learn skills in different ways. Some catch on quickly, others need more time. Even the way in which you demonstrate how a problem is solved can make a difference. I usually try several methods for solving problems rather than insist that they learn the traditional methods only. The little bit of extra time spent giving them the optional techniques could make a world of difference in their educational success.
As a parent of two school-aged children I have had the oppurtunity to learn about the newest teaching methods employed by teachers at this time. We often work together on math and science. I have always picked things up quickly, more quickly than my peers. My peers have often come to me to ask for my help in those areas. I also see how to apply what I have learned to original problems because I see connections and hold a deeper understanding of the material. My double major in Chemistry and Biochemistry with a mino in Mathematics was full of its fair share of difficult material, and I was almost always able to help my peers, as well as younger students, through their problems.
