Each of us has a different way of learning but the first step is to appeal to a student's natural inquisitiveness. If they can see real life applications for the skills they are learning they will become engaged and enthusiastic. I have and continue to use many of the skills I learnt in school and they have been instrumental in assisting me to find solutions to complex problems. While still in high school, I worked after-school tutoring elementary age students in a wide variety of subjects. The greatest moment for me, as a teacher, is what I call the “Aha!” that I see in a student’s eyes when he/she finally understands a troublesome concept. I believe that teaching is about empowering my students to take responsibility for their own learning.
