I believe that anyone can understand the subject matter if it is presnted to them in a way that fits their unique learning style. I can demonstrate several ways to learn the same material, and have learned through my years of teaching experience how to quickly identify which method is best understood by an individual. I am patient and understanding, and I relate well to students. I have always received excellent student reviews.
I received a BS degree in chemistry and a minor in applied biology. My original thought was to attend medical school (I even took the MCAT), but decided to persue a PhD in inorganic chemistry instead. I have extensive experience in working with students. Teaching is very subjective. Each individual learns according to his/her own style. What I find challenging and rewarding is to find that point where it “clicks”. I believe the best way to learn is through experience and discovery. As an example, I can describe the intelligence of an octopus. But until you actually see a video of one opening a jar for a treat, do you truly realize it as a thinking, planning being. I feel that teaching an individual how to use available resources is just as important as the actual subject. Enabling a student to go out and discover the wonders around him/her through research and education is a wonderful thing indeed.
