I have realized that the best test of whether you understand something is to be able to teach it successfully to another person. Though being prepared is not a direct part of the tutor-student interaction, it is absolutely necessary for the tutor to be prepared far beyond the basic level. My teaching style tends to rely heavily on humor and I really try to build a relationship with students that is fun for both parties. Particularly in a tutoring capacity, where interaction is one-on-one, I believe a fun working relationship between tutor and student is imporant. I also tend to be very patient in my explainations and try to creatively explain concepts in different ways to match different learning styles.

A Little Bit About Me...

Throughout my educational career I have always enjoyed science classes. Due to this proficiency I was selected as a teacher's assistant for two undergraduate Biology classes. I also took 3 science based education classes. These classes were a great experience where we worked at a local high school with three exceptional science teachers. During the school year, I also taught a six week Saturday science experience to 4th -6th graders; then in the summer I taught at two different science camps. After college, I chose to become a dental student at the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine.

A Little Bit About Me...

During my time at the LRC, I developed a teaching style where I first understood the learning style of the student (i.e. visual or auditory) and then discovered why they wanted tutoring, wanted to focus on, and what they wanted to accomplish. I would then delve into the subject matter at hand, drawing, discussing, or having them draw any specific process or problem. Finally, I would have them tell me what they understood from the process that we just discussed. If I felt the student was confident in their abilities I would test them, if I found that they were not very confident in their abilities, I would discuss the lesson and confirm that they understood. In these cases, I would also try to work on their academic confidence.
